About the collections

Our Digital Projects:

As part of our efforts to support the library’s mission of providing and sustaining the free flow of information, we have developed multiple digital collections falling under the guidance of the Forsyth Library Digital Collections Initiative (FLDCI) [see About Us].

It is our ongoing mission not only to provide access and retrieval, but also to develop and maintain a “safety zone,” in which the new digital information generated by us will be preserved for the long-term using, whenever possible, industry-wide best practices, well-established standards, and open source formats and software solutions.

Interactive "Data Visualization" Searching

One of our current innovations under development is the employment of interactive search interfaces using open-source software developed by MIT's SIMILE Widgets program.  These are intended to facilitate searching by providing data visualization of our digital collections.  We are using Timeline, Exhibit, and Timeplot Widgets to provide interactive search avenues for our users.  Click on the links to the timelines and interfaces in the appropriate collections to try a different search experience.

Reproduction and Use

Commercial use or distribution of any work on this Web site is not permitted without prior permission of the copyright holder.  Fort Hays State University holds copyright to selected works featured on this Web site, for which those rights were granted by the donor, in accordance with U.S. and international copyright laws.  Copyright to some material, however, may belong to the authors or their descendants, or may be in the public domain.  Requests to reproduce any work on this site should be sent to Digital Curation Librarian, y_ohira@fhsu.edu.

Takedown Policy

Parties who have questions or who wish to contest the use of specific works on this site may contact the Forsyth Library Digital Collections Initiative (FLDCI).  Takedown notices must include a physical or electronic signature of the copyright owner, proof of copyright ownership, a statement that (under proof of perjury) you are the rights holder or an authorized agent, and identification of the material claimed to be infringing.  Takedown notices will be handled in accordance with the Digital Millenium Copyright Act DMCA.

Congressional Papers / NASA Documents & Basic Restrictions

Two copyright provisions that relate to Congressional Papers are Sections 105 and 101 of the United States Copyright Act. Section 105 states that "copyright protection under this title is not available for any work of the United States Government." Section 101 states that a "work of the United States Government is a work prepared by an officer or employee of the United States Government as part of that person's official duties.

A few restrictions apply to NASA documents.  Under no circumstance should the appearance of the NASA symbol or seal be considered to imply an endorsement of or relationship with Fort Hays State University. Images with the seal are used for educational purposes.  According to NASA: "NASA still images, audio files and video generally are not copyrighted. You may use NASA imagery, video and audio material for educational or informational purposes, including photo collections, textbooks, public exhibits and Internet Web pages. This general permission extends to personal Web pages. . . . This general permission does not extend to use of the NASA insignia logo (the blue "meatball" insignia), the retired NASA logotype (the red "worm" logo) and the NASA seal. These images may not be used by persons who are not NASA employees or on products (including Web pages) that are not NASA sponsored."   http://www.publicdomainsherpa.com/us-government-works.html
